You have the results. What about the scar left behind?

That is one concern that surgery typically doesn’t have an answer for.

You have your surgery done and are happy with the result. Your body is back to the shape or maybe improved in shape, just like you pictured it in your head. But the one thing that is now bothering you, is the scar left behind after surgery. That seems to be taking its time to calm down.

Where is your scar located?

Usually after an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) or caesarean, the scar tends to be placed in the lower abdomen and follows the line of the original incision. At times, some pulling occurs during healing, resulting in a small dip in the waist. There are enough searches done online regarding “scar revision for tummy tuck” and “c section scar revision”, that these phrases point directly to the typical lower abdominal location.

In cases involving breast procedures, the scar is usually found either beneath the fold or around the areola. Scar revision after breast lift is quite a common concern post surgery and usually shows up several months down the line after breast related surgeries.

A lot of concerns also tend to cater around stretch marks, which seems quite unusual considering the fact that the surgery never went to the place from where the tissue was taken.

The treatments available and in what order:

There are two separate types of problems that exist with scars, and they are resolved differently.

  • If your scar is pulled apart, widened, or is dipping, that is a structural issue. As such, it requires a surgical intervention to free up the tissue and then repair it correctly again.
  • If your scar is healed unevenly, shiny, or slightly discoloured but is lying flat, that is a superficial issue. Using surgical scar laser treatment with an advanced CO2 machine treats the surface of the scar by addressing issues of texture and colour, after the tissues underneath have settled down completely.

But the fact of the matter is, most scars are both.

In these situations you might have to undergo surgical scar removal first and then remove the surface scars using a laser, usually a few months after scar removal through surgery.

When is your scar
considered keloid?

One type stands alone.

  • Keloids don’t lie flat. Instead, they become thickened and grow beyond the boundaries of the original wound. Many times this occurs years after the initial wound closed.
  • Hypertrophic scars look very similar, but remain within the original line.

Laser treatment for keloid scar softens the raised tissue. As to whether a laser is sufficient to resolve your keloid or if undergoing surgery via our keloid scar consultation will better address your issue, depends upon your individual case.

What is the cost right now?

Surgical scar revision cost depends on the following:

  • How big is your scar
  • Where is your scar located
  • How has your scar healed among others

Arriving at Kliniken this September

If you’re travelling in for CO2 laser resurfacing from Leeds or elsewhere in North Yorkshire or indeed anywhere in the North of England, you’re welcome here too, as we are the only private site in the North of England with this in the private sector.

Treatments run from October through to March.

You don’t have to wait until then to get answers. A consultation can happen sooner. Treatment itself just can’t start until the laser physically arrives.

Frequently asked questions

  • How soon after surgery can this be looked at?
    Sometimes, softening agents can begin working within a couple of weeks. However, larger treatments such as laser or surgical revision require that the affected area be fully healed before proceeding. This usually means waiting a couple of months.
  • Will my scar completely disappear?
    Often yes, but not completely. Anyone claiming otherwise isn’t being honest with you. What is possible is a flattened, lightened coloured scar that no longer bothers you as much as it does today.
  • Do all keloid scars require surgery?
    No. Keloid scar treatment laser options work well for some, while others benefit from surgical options. It truly depends upon evaluating your specific scar during our consultation at our clinic in Harrogate.
