✦ Overview

What is abdominoplasty?

The most commonly sought-after body procedure for people having undergone pregnancy or experiencing significant weight loss with both dietary changes and exercise unable to change the look of their stomach.

Repairing the abdominal wall is not merely cosmetic.

Repairing the muscle wall may alleviate lower back pain while restoring your core strength lost due to years of stretching.

How is abdominoplasty or tummy tuck done?

An abdominal tuck will accomplish two functions simultaneously as shown below.

First, the surgeon will remove the excess skin from the lower abdomen, which includes the hanging apron of skin below the navel.

Second, when the abdominal muscles have become detached (which is known as diastasis recti and is very common among post-pregnancy women) the surgeon will reconnect them. This second function is key.

Areas we operate on, the procedure and our methodology

At Kliniken, tummy tuck done at Kliniken in Harrogate is typically completed as day case surgery using sedation or general anaesthesia. The surgery takes about 2-4 hours. In many cases, you should be able to leave hospital on the same day of the surgery.

At Kliniken, patients from all over the UK visit our clinic for tummy tuck as there is no rotation of surgeons involved through each stage of your care and no junior personnel replacing the consultant surgeon.

✦ Why patients choose a tummy tuck procedure

Benefits of a tummy tuck in Harrogate

A tummy tuck changes how your abdomen looks & how it functions. Here's what most patients notice in the months after surgery.

Tighter contour

The loose skin you have tucked away has finally disappeared. Your jeans are fitting again. You are no longer covering yourself up with oversized shirts.

Core strength

Abdominoplasty can close diastasis recti if pregnancy left you with an opening in the middle of your abdomen. It also helps strengthen your abdominal muscles to improve your posture, as well as help reduce the lower back pain post pregnancy.

Lasting results

What you will be getting from this surgery does not fade. As long as you maintain a stable weight after your surgery and do not plan on becoming pregnant again, the results of your surgery at six months post surgery should remain the same in ten years.

✦ Is an abdominoplasty procedure for you?

Signs you may be a candidate for tummy tuck in Harrogate

You're wondering if surgery is the right call or if you should keep trying without it.
Here's who tends to benefit most from abdominoplasty surgery.

  • You are finished with your family planning.
  • You have reached a stable weight.

And nothing you do will improve the way you look from the outside with regard to losing that little extra fat around your navel area.

✦ Honest risks of an abdominoplasty

Risks of tummy tuck

You want the honest version, and not the marketing one.
Every surgery carries risk & abdominoplasty is no exception. Here's what you should know before you book.

Scarring

Scarring

You’ll have a relatively permanent scar on the bottom of your bikini line and a slightly smaller vertical scar where the belly button is. Both scars typically fade over time often between 12 to 18 months.

Seroma & bleeding

Seroma & bleeding

Fluid can collect under the skin & may need draining at a follow-up. Bleeding under the skin is less common but possible. Careful surgical technique & early movement keep both risks low.

Infection

Infection

Although infections associated with tummy tuck is rare, they do tend to occur in the initial 14 days post surgery. If anything appears out of the ordinary during your recovery, please contact us immediately.

Skin sensation changes

Skin sensation changes

The area of your lower abdomen that underwent surgery will be numb for few months. Once again, nearly all sensation should return within one year. However, it’s possible some small areas adjacent to the scar may experience permanent numbness.

Blood clots (DVT and PE)

Blood clots (DVT and PE)

While clots in either your legs (DVTs) or lungs (PEs) are very rare they can be extremely dangerous. To minimise the risks, we utilise compression stockings, blood thinners, and encourage an early return to walking.

If you're not happy

If you're not happy

Ultimately, not every individual is satisfied with their results after undergoing tummy tuck. At the time of your six-month clinical evaluation, your surgeon will have a discussion with you regarding your satisfaction level with the outcomes of your surgery.

✦ How is abdominoplasty performed?

What happens during a tummy tuck

A tummy tuck takes 2 to 4 hours under general anaesthetic. Here's what the procedure actually involves.

Step 1 : The incision

Your surgeon makes a horizontal cut low through your abdomen that lies below where your bikini lines sit. Depending upon how much of your excess skin your surgeon will be removing, this horizontal cut can vary in length.

Step 2 : Muscle repair

Once our surgeon has lifted up your excess skin, he checks your abdominal muscles. If those muscles have separated (a condition known as diastasis recti) then your surgeon will permanently attach them together. It is this which gives you the flatness you want from within.

Step 3 : Skin removal & redraping

Your remaining excess skin is trimmed away. What remains is pulled downward to cover your tightened muscle wall and your navel is repositioned so that it rests normally in its place.

Step 4 : Closure & drains

The incision is closed in layers with dissolvable stitches under the skin. No external stitches to remove, no drains for a standard procedure.. When needed, any drainage tubes used during surgery are removed by the time you attend your follow up appointment.

✦ How will I recover after abdominoplasty?

Week-by-week recovery after tummy tuck in Harrogate

Recovery from abdominoplasty surgery is gradual. Most patients return to work in 2 to 3 weeks, but full healing takes months.
Here's roughly how it unfolds.

  1. Week 1

You're home the same day in most cases. Sleep propped up, walk gently around the house, wear your compression garment day & night. Showering from 48 hours. No driving, no lifting.

  2. Week 2

Movement gets easier. You'll have a follow-up around days 5 to 7 to check healing. Garment stays on around the clock. Short walks outside are encouraged.

  3. Weeks 3 to 4

Most patients return to desk-based work. Manual jobs need 4 to 6 weeks. The garment usually switches to daytime-only by the end of week 4.

  4. Weeks 6 to 8

Light exercise returns: walking, gentle cycling, low-impact movement. No core work, no running, no heavy lifting yet. The scar is still pink & raised.

  5. 3 to 6 months & beyond

Full exercise back in with surgeon sign-off. The scar fades & flattens from month 3 onwards, continuing for up to 18 months. By 6 months, what you see is close to your final result.

✦ Frequently asked questions

FAQs on tummy tuck in Harrogate

Abdominoplasty costs vary significantly between clinics & surgeons within the UK. Prices generally start at about £7000 for a basic abdominoplasty & can rise to £12000 when liposuction is added. At Kliniken in Harrogate, our starting price for an abdominoplasty is £7875 which includes all associated charges. The final price is always confirmed during your consultation.

No. As abdominoplasty is classified as a cosmetic surgical procedure, it is unlikely that a private medical insurer such as BUPA, AXA, aviva or wpa will pay for your treatment.

Only occasionally. And only in cases where there is a clearly identifiable medical reason for the operation (for example, severe skin infection caused by loose skin hanging from your abdomen due to extreme weight loss). Cosmetic reasons are not a valid basis for funding abdominoplasty through the NHS.

If you meet these criteria, you should qualify for an abdominoplasty;

  • You have completed your family
  • Your weight has remained stable for at least six months
  • Your BMI is under 28-30
  • You do not smoke

We consider all factors related to your medical history during your initial consultation before confirming whether or not you qualify.

Generally speaking, most of our patients who undergo an abdominoplasty fall into the BMI category below 28 - 30. Being in a lower BMI category provides you with better long term outcomes and reduces the risk of complications during your surgery. If you have a higher BMI than 30, we can discuss alternative treatment options for you at your consultation.

At the bare minimum, you should wait a minimum of 6 months after delivering a child before undergoing an abdominoplasty. It’s also recommended to wait a minimum of 6 months after stopping breastfeeding. You must ensure that you have reached a point of stability in terms of your weight and allow time for your body to recover from pregnancy before considering an abdominoplasty.

Yes. Although male abdominoplasties are relatively rare compared to female abdominoplasties, they are very effective in improving the appearance of loose skin on the abdomen, particularly in individuals who have undergone significant weight loss and cannot improve their body shape using resistance exercises.

Typically, you will return to work requiring minimal physical activity within 2-3 weeks post surgery. Patients whose job requires manual labour will take approximately 4-6 weeks to return to their duties. Generally, light exercise can begin again within 6-8 weeks post surgery, whereas heavy exercise should be delayed until you receive clearance from your surgeon, which typically occurs around 12-16 weeks post surgery.

You can start showering again 48 hours post surgery. Most patients can resume driving safely after 2-3 weeks post surgery too. However, this depends entirely upon how quickly you are able to discontinue use of pain medication and demonstrate the ability to make an emergency stop. Light exercise can begin again at 6 weeks after surgery and heavy exercise around 12-16 weeks.

In general, patients wear a compression garment day and night for the 4 weeks after surgery and then only during the day for another 4-8 weeks. Ultimately, your surgeon will advise you specifically regarding the length of time needed to wear the compression garment in relation to your individual recovery.

The primary scar from an abdominoplasty is located along the base of your bikini line. Due to its location, it will be concealed by either your undergarments or swimsuits. In addition, there will be a second scar near the belly button area. Initially scars tend to appear pinkish-red and raised but they gradually fade and become flat over a period of approximately one year and eighteen months post-surgery. They will never completely disappear.

Yes. Diastasis recti refers to the separation of the abdominal muscles. During an abdominoplasty, the abdominal muscles are sutured back together thereby correcting diastasis recti. This internal muscle repair allows for a flatter midsection.

As long as you remain at a healthy weight and are not having additional children, you can expect to maintain the benefits from your tummy tuck for a decade or longer. Once you've had a tummy tuck, the skin and muscles that were repaired during surgery cannot "un-do" themselves. Therefore, what you see when you look in the mirror at 6 months post-op is generally what you will see 10 years later.

Tummy tucks remove excess skin and tighten the abdominal muscle while liposuction removes excess fat. Therefore, if you are looking to improve your overall body shape by tightening up loose skin that has developed due to pregnancy or significant weight loss, a tummy tuck would likely be your best option. On the other hand, if you have areas of fat that are difficult to get rid of despite eating well and exercising regularly, but otherwise have good skin elasticity, then liposuction may be enough on its own. It is common for individuals to choose to have both procedures performed together.
