✦ Overview

What is a breast lift?

Breast lift surgery or Mastopexy replaces and reshapes breasts that have lost their position. It does not change the cup size. Only its shape, firmness and where the nipple sits.

The excess skin is removed. Nipple is moved upwards. Tissue around the new contour is tightened to hold in place.

What are the techniques for the degrees of sagging?

There are four techniques for all degrees of sagging.

  • Crescent for the smallest degree of lift.
  • Periareolar (the “donut”) for mild.
  • Vertical (also known as lollipop) for moderate.
  • Anchor (or inverted-t) for the most extensive reshaping.

What decides the type of technique used for the kind of sagging you have?

Degrees of sagging can be classified using the Regnault classification.

  • Grade 1 represents mild sagging
  • Grade 2 is moderate
  • Grade 3 is severe.

The type of technique used will depend on the degree of sagging. Photographs and diagrams help explain this during your consultation with us.

✦ Why patients choose a breast lift

Benefits of breast lift surgery in Harrogate

A breast lift changes how your breasts sit, fit, and feel. There are four shifts patients notice mostly.

Restored shape

Pregnancy, weight loss and time pull downward on the breast. A mastopexy returns it back to its original position. Higher sitting, fuller upper curve and the nipple where it originally sat.

Confident fit

Bras stop gaping wide open. Swim wear fits better. Tops fit like they were cut to fit before. Most of our patients tell us this is the one thing they notice about themselves daily.

Lasting position

A breast uplift is structural in nature. Skin removed, tissue tightened, nipple re-positioned. Results last years however gravity, weight gain/loss & pregnancy could affect these results.

Familiar feel

A breast lift surgery reshapes what is already yours. No implants, no foreign material, no volume increase. The breast that was lifted is the breast you know.

✦ Is a breast lift right for you?

Signs you may be a candidate for breast lift surgery

A breast uplift benefit's women whose breasts have been altered in some or the other way over time.
We frequently see four patterns at our clinic.

When breastfeeding, the upper part of the breast is stretched and emptied. As a result, the nipple falls. While volume may be regained somewhat, it does not always regain its previous proportions. Therefore, if you want to restore your breasts to how they were before pregnancy, an ideal time to do so would be after you are no longer breastfeeding and have had all your children.

✦ Honest risks of a breast lift

Risks of breast lift surgery

All surgical procedures carry some level of risk. Although a breast lift is a long established procedure and generally considered safe when performed by a skilled surgeon, there are the following realities to consider as you make your decision. We prefer that you know about them before we begin.

Sensation changes

Sensation changes

Most women experience regaining full sensation of their nipples and breasts within six months. Some dont. Nipple sensation loss has been recognized as a potential complication from mastopexy and the greater amount of lifting needed for the procedure correlates directly to the higher risk.

Breastfeeding impact

Breastfeeding impact

A breast lift can potentially damage milk ducts. Some women are able to successfully breast feed after having a breast lift however, others find it either difficult or impossible. This is another topic of discussion to have during your initial consultation with us.

Scar visibility

Scar visibility

Scars are unavoidable. They surround the areola and go vertically down the center of the breast and possibly along the inframmamary fold (anchor pattern). Most scars will decrease in over a period of 12-18 months. Scars typically do not completely go away. Dark skinned individuals may see their scars remain elevated or develop pigment.

Asymmetry and shape

Asymmetry and shape

No surgeon cannot guarantee complete symmetry post surgery. There is always going to be some degree of difference in terms of how your body heals. Small differences in nipple position, scar settlement or final shape are common. with significant asymmetry occasionally needing revision.

Healing complications

Healing complications

Although wound complications are rare and usually occur at the junction of the T-incision in an anchor-type lift, smokers and diabetic patients are more likely to experience complications such as infection, slow wound healing or isolated areas of skin loss.

✦ Frequently asked questions

FAQs on breast lift surgery in Harrogate

Mr. Chris Munson or Mr. Andrew Kilshaw performs a breast lift using general anaesthesia and it typically lasts from 2-2.5 hours. He removes extra skin, repositions the nipple to a higher point on the chest wall and tightens the tissue around it. Depending upon the amount of lift needed, there are different types of incisions used.

None. Both of these terms describe the same operation, which is medically known as mastopexy. Searches made often use each term but the actual procedure is the same.

Not necessarily. A breast lift (without implants) improves shape and positioning. However, if you have lost volume in the top part of your breast and wish to restore this, you might benefit from having both a lift and implant procedure. Mr Chris Munson or Mr Andrew Kilshaw will discuss options at your consultation.

Typically we advise waiting until at least 6 months post-weaning. It takes your breasts at least that length of time to stabilize in their ultimate shape and size. Undergoing the procedure prior to this can put you at risk of performing surgery on tissue that is still going through many physical changes.

This is a grading system for how much your breast has dropped. Grade I is mild, Grade II moderate, Grade III severe. This determines which mastopexy method is best suited for you. At your consultation, we will assess where you fit into this category.

Yes. Scars are inevitable when having a breast uplift. They generally fade to very fine pale lines over 12-18 months. However, they never completely go away. In addition, people who have darker skin tone may have raised or pigmented scars. Many scar patterns are designed to be hidden under bras or swimsuits.

Yes. Although, most women will regain their complete sensitivity to their nipples within 6 months, a small number may experience either partial or complete loss of nipple sensitivity. There is an increased risk associated with greater lifting and therefore, we discuss this openly at your consultation.

Possibly. However, because mastopexy affects milk ducts and the extent of the lift that occurs has an impact on feeding ability, some women are able to breastfeed while others cannot. If future breastfeeding is important to you please let us know at your consultation so the right technique decisions can be taken it into consideration.

A breast lift provides good results for years but does not prevent the natural aging process. Other factors such as gravity, changes in weight, age related changes and subsequent pregnancies will continue regardless of the success of the initial surgery. Patients with smaller breasts and whose body mass index remains steady tend to get longer lasting results from breast lifts than those who have larger breasts that may eventually stretch the skin again.

Possible. Some patients come back between after a decade from their original surgery for a second or third lift especially if they had implants inserted at the time or experienced significant weight gain or loss or subsequent pregnancy changes. We do not promote our breast lift surgery as being “permanent”. Rather, we say that our surgery is “durable” but nothing stays the same forever.

Let us know. If there is something that could be improved through revision surgery then we will outline what options are available, what costs are involved and if it is appropriate to perform revision surgery once your wounds are fully healed. We’d prefer to have an open discussion about any potential issues with your results now rather than pretend that your first set of results will ultimately be your final results.

You will usually go home the same day as surgery. During week one you will be resting and wearing a surgical bra. By week two your stitches will be removed and you’ll be ready to go back to working at your desk. From weeks 3-4 you will wear a soft bra and begin gentle walking. Week six is when you can resume all normal activities and begin exercising normally again. Final shape will start to settle within 6-12 months.
