Breast augmentation mastopexy in Harrogate

Combined breast lift with implants. NHS Consultant-led care across North Yorkshire.

You've probably thought about this for many years. Time, pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations have all impacted your breasts. Now your breasts are smaller and positioned lower than they once were. A lift alone or implants alone could only address the first part of the problem.

Breast augmentation mastopexy also known as uplift is a combination of breast lift and breast enlargement using implants or fat all in one surgical procedure. This combined approach restores volume and positioning to your breasts simultaneously. Consultant Plastic Surgeon Mr. Andrew Kilshaw performs every breast augmentation and uplift at Kliniken in Harrogate.

✦ Overview

What is breast augmentation mastopexy?

A breast augmentation mastopexy is a single operative procedure combining two distinct surgeries: a breast lift and a breast enlargement with implants and/ fat. Other terms you might have heard describing the same procedure include: “breast lift and implants”, “breast augmentation and uplift,” “augmentation mastopexy,” etc.

How does breast augmentation mastopexy work?

The lift portion of the surgery involves removing excess skin from around your nipples and areolas as well as moving them to a higher location on the chest wall. The enlargement portion of the surgery involves placing an implant or injecting fat behind your existing breast tissue to provide additional volume. By doing these two procedures in conjunction with each other, the overall goal is to improve the placement of your breasts and their fullness in a single post operative recovery period.

Which breast surgery is suitable for your case?

Women who have experienced loss of volume and sagging are good candidates for a breast augmentation mastopexy. If you have only lost volume but no sagging has occurred then breast augmentation with implants alone may be sufficient. Similarly, if your breasts have drooped and you’re content with their current size, then a breast uplift surgery alone might be the best option for you. Mr. Kilshaw will assess your individual needs during the initial consultation to determine whether breast augmentation mastopexy is the most suitable course of action.

Benefits of breast augmentation mastopexy in Harrogate

breast augmentation mastopexy in harrogate
Restored shape

You may experience a drop in the size of your breast after pregnancy, nursing or losing weight. When you undergo a breast augmentation mastopexy, you have your upper breast volume restored as well as lifted to its original position and height so that your breasts regain their original size and shape.

One time recovery

You get two procedures done at once with just one surgery. Therefore, there is only one anesthetic, time taken off work only once and only one timeline to achieve your end results. In many cases, especially those involving working mothers, the practicality of having to recover only once is very important.

Wardrobe confidence

Having bras that fit you comfortably again, tops that rest correctly across your chest, swimwear that requires less adjustment, these are all examples of how breast augmentation mastopexy helps restore your wardrobe choices. Many women stop wearing certain clothing items because they do not fit properly. Breast augmentation mastopexy makes these items wearable again and allows you to shop for new items knowing they will fit your body.

Long considered

For most women considering breast augmentation mastopexy, the idea has likely crossed their minds for years. Rarely is it something thought about at the last minute. Because of this, we encourage you to consider your options carefully. We believe that every patient deserves thoughtful consideration. That’s why our consultations at Kliniken always last at least an hour and there is never any pressure to schedule surgery immediately.

✦ How can I qualify for breast augmentation mastopexy surgery in Harrogate?

Signs you may be a candidate for breast augmentation mastopexy in Harrogate

You see that your breasts appear less full than they were before. The upper portion of the breast appears empty. Also, bras that fit well before are gaping at the top. This is the typical “empty” feeling after pregnancy or after losing weight. An implant may be able to help restore some of the volume, however the nipple has to be placed in the correct position.

Risks of breast augmentation mastopexy surgery

All surgery carries risk. Breast augmentation mastopexy surgery is considered a low-risk procedure when performed by an experienced consultant plastic surgeon, but it is important you understand what can happen and how we manage it. The risks below are listed honestly, not softened.

Scarring

Scarring

The scar pattern follows an anchor shape: around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease and along the crease itself. The scar is permanent. At six weeks expect it to be red and raised. Fading occurs by twelve months.

Wound healing

Wound healing

The area at the base of the breast, where all three incisions meet, has significantly increased tension due to the fact that the skin and muscle were stretched during surgery. This results in slow healing of the skin as well as potential wound separation rectified with dressing.

Nipple sensation

Nipple sensation

Decreased nipple sensation is expected in the majority of patients for several months post surgery. 1 in 10 may experience long term decreased sensation. Total loss of sensation is less frequent, although it does occur in some cases.

Asymmetry

Asymmetry

Although meticulous attention is given to ensure that both breasts receive equal treatment during surgery, breasts tend to heal at slightly different rates, thus resulting in some degree of asymmetry post operatively. If there is a noticeable difference, we will consider revision during the 12th month of your follow up.

Implant complications

Implant complications

Breast implants can cause capsular contracture where scar tissue develops tightly around the implant or rupture over time. They are not considered lifetime devices. On average, most patients will require replacement of their implants within 10-15 years.

Breast implant illness

Breast implant illness

Many patients report various symptoms that they believe are related to their implants, such as chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritic type pain in multiple joints and brain fog. The research between breast implants and these types of symptoms is still evolving. We will thoroughly discuss this topic with you prior to any surgical decisions being made.

Still deciding if breast augmentation mastopexy is right for you?

Combined breast augmentation and mastopexy carries a slightly higher complication rate than either procedure performed alone. Mr Kilshaw or Mr Munson will discuss this honestly at consultation, and will recommend a two-stage approach instead if your circumstances suggest the combined operation carries more risk than benefit.

✦ Frequently asked questions

FAQs on breast augmentation mastopexy in Harrogate

This is the most important point on this page and honestly: it depends upon where you start. A combined surgery means only one anesthesia and only one recovery. However, it creates much more vascular tension than each would independently. Some women, especially women who require a large amount of lift with larger implants choose to perform the lift first and add implants in 6-12 months. Mr Kilshaw or Mr Munson will let you know whether this option fits your specific situation.

Your scar patterns will be forever. They run from around the areola, vertically to the breast crease, and along the breast crease itself. After 6 weeks your scars will be red and elevated. At 12 months they are generally flat and pink. And by 2 years most of your scars are pale and very soft. Some women scar worse than others and there is no good way to determine ahead of time which category you will be placed in.

Breast Implants are not lifetime products. Most will need to be replaced in approximately 10-15 years and in many cases even sooner due to complications. Replacing the implants requires another separate surgical procedure and thus another separate cost. This potential future cost needs to be factored into your original decision making process and not just the initial cost of the procedure.

If you become pregnant again, it could cause a change in the volume of your breast and possibly your skin elasticity, thereby creating a new look for your breasts that may differ significantly from how they looked immediately post surgery. If you anticipate having additional children in your immediate family future, we typically suggest delaying your decision to proceed with this type of surgery.

While some women experience reported symptoms associated with BII (fatigue, joint pain, brain fog, etc.), the current science has produced varied results and further studies are needed to provide definitive answers regarding the legitimacy of BII. We will not disregard concerns you have regarding BII, nor will we overstate them. If you ever decide to remove your implants, we will fully support that decision.

Weight stability is key. Excessive weight gain causes stretching of the skin envelope surrounding your implants causing possible issues with implant placement. Excessive weight loss reduces the natural breast tissue surrounding the implant making it more noticeable or palpable. Ideally you should be close to your ideal weight prior to undergoing surgery.

Whether or not your breasts will appear normal post surgery largely depends on what options you desire in terms of appearance. Mr. Kilshaw prefers to select implant sizes based on proportionally matching your frame rather than selecting an implant size based on achieving maximum volume. In other words, we aim for breasts that resemble a naturally fuller and lifted version of your existing breasts rather than breasts that are overly dramatic. If you prefer a more dramatic appearance, that is also an acceptable preference for us to assist you with during our consultation discussion.

The first 3 days are probably going to be the worst part of the recovery. Most women describe their discomfort as a deep and heavy aching sensation versus a sharp stabbing sensation and fortunately most women can control it quite effectively using prescribed medications. The majority of patients stop taking strong pain relievers by the end of the first week. The greatest nuisance for most women during their recovery period will likely be sleeping on their backs.

Typically desk work returns 2-3 weeks post-op. Walking lightly begins shortly thereafter. Lower body exercises (squats, lunges, deadlifts, leg press etc.) can begin at 6 weeks post-op. Any exercises involving your chest (push-ups, dumbbells, swimmers, high impact aerobics etc.) will need to wait until at least 12 weeks post-op so as not to risk further stretching of the incision scars or dislocation of the implants.

Possible yes, but definitely no guarantee. The portion of the surgery that includes lifting can potentially damage the milk ducts that exist between the breast tissue and nipple. While some women continue to produce adequate amounts of milk successfully after this type of surgery, others have experienced difficulty establishing a sufficient milk supply. If breast feeding additional children is important to you, this is something that should be weighed into your decision making process.

Each consultation is approximately an hour long. During that time Mr. Kilshaw will evaluate you, take measurements and photographically document you clinically with your consent, followed by a discussion regarding what can reasonably be expected from your physical attributes at the beginning of your journey. You will also get to try out various implant sizes to help determine the right volume for you. At the conclusion of the appointment you will receive a clearly defined surgical plan, including a price quote without any pressure to schedule surgery.

This is discussed in an honest way. There are things that can be addressed by revision surgery and there are things that cannot. If your concerns include those items that may have been corrected through a revision surgery (i.e., significant asymmetries, poor positioning of implants or scarring issues) then we will make a plan to revise and discuss the costs associated with this from the very beginning. However, if your dissatisfaction relates to the size you wanted at the time of the original procedure, we will have a completely different discussion. We will not lie to you about what can be accomplished and neither will we shy away from having this discussion.
