✦ Overview

What types of wart can be removed?

Patients are not always sure whether they have a wart, a verruca or something else that just looks similar. That is normal. The first job is getting the diagnosis right.

We assess common warts on the hands, fingers and around the nails. These usually feel rough and can keep catching. We also assess plane warts, which tend to be flatter, smoother and more likely to appear on the face or hands.

Filiform warts are more thread-like. They often show up around the eyes, nose or mouth. Periungual warts sit around or under fingernails and toenails, which can make them more awkward to treat.

Some patients actually have seborrhoeic keratosis rather than a viral wart. This is a harmless age-related skin growth that can look quite wart-like. Verrucas on the feet are assessed case by case. If you are not sure what you have, the consultation is there to sort that out.

✦ Types of warts

What types of wart can be removed?

While some people know exactly what their skin condition is, a large number of individuals are unsure if what they have is a wart, a verruca or another skin growth that appears to be similar. There is nothing wrong with this uncertainty. The main concern for Kliniken is making an accurate diagnosis.

  • Common warts occur on the hands and fingers as well as around the nails. Warts typically feel bumpy and can easily catch.
  • Plane warts are flat and smooth. They typically occur on the hands or face.
  • Filiform warts grow vertically from the skin. They commonly develop near the eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Periungual warts form on or under the fingernail or toenail. These locations can create issues related to accessing these areas.
  • Some patients have seborrhoeic keratoses instead of a wart. These are benign, age related skin growths that resemble warts.
  • Verruca foot lesion is evaluated individually.

If you are unsure what your lesion is, the purpose of a consultation is to determine this.

✦ Expectations after surgery

What results can I expect after my wart removal?

In general, most warts can be removed completely in one procedure. Following removal of the wart, it is common for you to experience a small dressing, scab or mark until the affected area has healed. While this is part of the healing process, surface level healing normally occurs within 1-2 weeks post procedure.

Complete healing of the affected area may require additional time depending upon location (e.g., nail bed or facial). A small scar may result from wart removal. Larger/ deeper lesions may produce a slightly more noticeable scar. In many instances, scars soften and fade significantly over time.

It is possible for warts to recur. That is the honest answer. As noted previously, recurrence rates are lower following proper surgical removal compared to use of topical surface treatments alone however, recurrence cannot be eliminated entirely since viral cells could potentially remain present in surrounding tissue post surgical removal. Should recurrence occur, we evaluate the area again and provide guidance as to your next course of action.

✦ After wart removal

Side effects, scarring & possible complications to wart removal

Short term side effects

All surgery carries risks. Wart removal is no exception. The most common short term side effects include pain, redness and mild swelling in the area where the procedure was done. Temporary changes to colour of the skin (lighter/darker) while healing is a possibility with all surgical procedures.

Scarring and Infection

Small scars may occur depending upon the size of the wart, how deep into the skin it penetrated and where on the body it occurs. Although infection is not common it can occur. If you experience increased pain, increased swelling or discharge from the area, contact our clinic.

Recurrence and Anaesthetic Reactions

Another potential risk includes recurrence, especially with viral warts. Reactions to the use of topical/local anesthesia are rare but they are discussed during the informed consent process. All procedures are performed by a named consultant plastic surgeon and you will have aftercare support if you require assistance at home

Do I need a GP referral?

No. Contact us directly. Many patients believe that they must obtain a referral from their general practitioner before visiting Kliniken. You do not need to do so.

You can either call us or send us photographs, if that is preferred. Our staff will then schedule a consultation with our consultant plastic surgeon who will confirm whether or not your lesion can be removed and confirm what your lesion is likely to be before advising you on the most effective method for removing it.

Is private wart removal worth it?

This question was asked by many patients and it is a valid one. NHS treatment still has a role. However, access to treatment is often limited.

NHS treatment may not be provided at all if the wart is not deemed medically significant enough. Even if treatment is available, waiting times can be lengthy. When a lesion is visually noticeable, causes discomfort, catches during routine activities, etc., lengthy waits can become frustrating.
Direct access to a practitioner for rapid assessment and removal provides benefits including faster treatment time and consultant led care.

For those living in Harrogate with busy schedules (work/family/social obligations), rapid access to care is important. For others, NHS care may continue to be an optimal choice. Regardless of which path you choose, providing you with clear information without pressure allows you to make informed decisions.

✦ Frequently asked questions

FAQs on wart removal in Harrogate

Yes. As previously stated, warts are caused by viruses and therefore there is always a chance that if viral tissue remains in the skin surrounding the area that the wart has been removed from, that the wart could grow back. However, as mentioned above, removing a wart surgically reduces this likelihood much more than just treating the surface of the wart.

Although the chances of the wart returning after removal are lower than if you had only treated the surface of the wart, it is never entirely eliminated. If your wart grows back, we will review the area and discuss whether or not to proceed with further treatment.

Yes. Any time a wound is created in order to remove a wart, there is always a possibility that some form of scarring will occur. This is something that all patients need to understand prior to undergoing any type of removal procedure. For most patients, the resulting scar will decrease in visibility and eventually fade completely. Those patients whose warts are larger or located in less conspicuous locations are generally more likely to develop noticeable scars. Therefore, as previously mentioned, proper planning is essential in determining the best course of action for each patient's specific situation.

No. Self-referrals are accepted or you can contact us directly without having to obtain a referral from your general practitioner.

On average, 15-30 minutes per wart is required for removal. If deemed suitable, treatment can be completed on the same day as your consultation.

Local anesthesia is administered to numb the area prior to the procedure. As such, you should feel no discomfort while the procedure is taking place. Mild soreness in the treated area is typical for a few days immediately following the procedure.

Kliniken strives to provide patients with rapid access to appointments. same-day appointments are sometimes possible as well.

Seborrhoeic keratoses are benign lesions that result from aging skin and are typically found on sun exposed parts of the body. They can resemble warts due to their appearance however they are not viral like warts. Many patients confuse these types of lesions due to their similarity in appearance. Both can be successfully treated although accurate identification of each type of lesion is essential prior to commencing treatment.

We can examine and potentially remove warts located on the hands, fingers, face ,nails and verrucae on the feet on a case by case basis.

Not necessarily for every individual. While private wart removal provides speed, direct access to treatment and consultant led care, many individuals choose NHS care because it meets their needs despite waiting lists being longer and less flexible than those associated with private practice.

Generally speaking there is no pre-operative preparation necessary. Cleanse the area prior to arriving for your appointment, arrive prepared with any questions you may have or send high quality images of the wart via email in advance to your appointment if you think it will help facilitate your evaluation.
