✦ Overview

What is a thigh lift?

You have probably done all there is to do like squats, running, eat well for months and still have soft, loose areas around your inner thighs. That’s not an issue of willpower. Skin can be overstretched by weight changes and reduced by age and will never revert regardless of how hard you try.

The purpose of a thigh lift is to remove excess skin and fat from your thighs and tighten the remaining skin so that you experience firmer thighs and better body proportions. A thigh lift may also be referred to as thighplasty or a medial thigh lift depending upon whether the focus of the operation is on the inner thigh. This is the primary area that most individuals wish to address as this area tends to cause friction or chafe as it shows through clothing.
In some cases, you might require addressing of the outer thigh or a full lift. The appropriate method for each individual will depend on the amount of excess skin present and the location of the skin. Your surgeon will determine this during consultation.

Is a thigh lift right for you?

The majority of people who see us have either lost a significant amount of weight or they’ve experienced a loss in skin firmness as they’ve aged. The skin itself will not regain its former tightness without assistance. If any or all of these conditions apply to you, then a thigh lift may be appropriate:

  • You have achieved an acceptable level of stability regarding your weight (i.e., you’re no longer trying to lose).
  • You are able to undergo a general anaesthetic.
  • The extra skin is causing you problems (e.g., irritation due to chafing, self conscious about the appearance of your legs) and interfere with your daily activities
  • You are comfortable accepting that the removal of excess skin will leave you with a permanent scar.

The procedure

Your thigh lift will be performed as an outpatient procedure by way of general anaesthesia. The operation typically lasts 2 to 2.5 hrs. Most patients can then return home on the day of surgery.

  1. You stand to allow your surgeon to mark the site for your surgical wound so as to ensure it is positioned where it would need to be.
  2. The wound begins in the groin crease and extends downwards along the inner thigh, depending upon how much excess skin exists.
  3. The excess skin and fat is removed and what remains is pulled tight, generally with liposuction to create a slimmer appearance to your legs
  4. The wounds are closed using absorbable sutures and bandaged.
✦ What are the different types of thigh lift

Types of thigh lift

There's no single type of thigh lift surgery. Each one varies based upon the location and amount of excess skin you have.

Medial (inner) thigh lift

Medial (inner) thigh lift

The one most commonly referred to. The medial thigh lift is used to correct soft tissue hanging on the inside of the thigh and can cause friction or show under clothing. This has a small scar located at the bottom of the groin crease.

Lateral (outer) thigh lift

Lateral (outer) thigh lift

Tighten the lateral thigh area and hip. Most often as part of a lower body lift.

Short Thigh Lift

Short Thigh Lift

A smaller version of the above with less scarring in the same area of the groin. Used when excessive laxity exists primarily within the upper portion of the inner thigh.

Total Thigh Lift

Total Thigh Lift

Skin removal from the entire length of the thigh. Generally performed by individuals who have experienced significant weight loss. Greatest change and longest incision.

✦ Are the scars after thigh lift surgery for life?

Honest fact about the scars

The majority of the scar tucks into your groin fold where a swimsuit or undergarment will cover it. Depending upon what amount of tissue has been removed from the upper part of your thigh, the lower portion of the incision may run along the inside of your thigh.

As compared to other areas of the body, the inner thigh requires significantly more movement and friction as well as warmth, therefore the scars produced by thigh lifts have a higher propensity to stretch. This is completely normal for this region and does not indicate that there was an error made during surgery.

Scars also evolve over time. In general, raised and pink initially eventually fade to be paler and flat within many months, sometimes even a year or more.

What we do to minimize the appearance of scarring:

  • Place the scar in the natural groove in the crease that is possible given your anatomy
  • Close the layers in such a manner as to take the tension off the outer layer of skin
  • Give you a post op care regimen for your scar and evaluate it at each post op visit
✦ Honest risks of a thigh lift

Risks worth knowing

All surgery comes with some type of risk and the risks for a thigh lift tend to be slightly higher than those for most cosmetic surgeries due to the placement of the scar. We feel it's more important to be honest about these potential risks with you than it is to make a slick sales pitch.

Slow Healing

Slow wound healing along the incision lines, especially in the groin area

Seroma

Fat building up under the skin (seroma) after surgery

Scars

Wide or stretched out scars

Sensation

Numbness or altered sensation that usually returns to normal

Asymmetry

Some asymmetry between both legs

Serious risks like infection and blood clotting are less likely. At consultation our surgeon will explain all of these potential risks, as well as how we minimize them through wound closure techniques, post op care, follow ups and reviews.

✦ How does recovery look for you after thigh lift surgery?

Here's how recovery looks like

First few days

Rest with your legs elevated, walking slowly for the first couple of days with swelling and tightness in the area.

Weeks 1-2

Wear compression garments day and night and by the week's end you may be able to go back to your desk job. Your surgeon will typically assess your incisions about two weeks post op.

Weeks 3-4

Most patients have returned to their usual activities and some light physical activity may also resume during this time frame.

After 6 weeks

You'll meet with your surgeon again and begin gradually returning to regular exercises. Swelling will continue to resolve and the final contour of your skin will take several months to develop.

✦ What if you have loose skin in other places apart from your thigh too?

Combining procedures for thigh lift

Loose skin after weight loss goes beyond the thighs. Many people are able to have their thigh lift with other procedures under one anaesthestic and one recovery rather than two

✦ What can you see after the surgery?

Results

The changes from a thigh lift can be something that you both see and experience. Your thighs will be both thinner and sit more firmly so they will be closer in size to the rest of your body.

You may find that:

  • Clothing fits as desired.
  • Rubbing and chafing diminishes.
  • You are no longer changing how you sit or what you put on

Your ultimate shape will emerge over the next few months as swelling reduces. Keep your weight stable to have lasting results though normal aging will carry on like everything else.

✦ Frequently asked questions

FAQs on thigh lift in Harrogate

A thigh lift (also known as thighplasty) reduces excess skin and fat on the thighs and helps tighten the remaining skin, to help give a tighter, more balanced appearance to the legs.

Our prices for a thigh lift start at £7350. There are no additional costs of operating theatres, facilities etc. Additional procedures such as liposuction are quoted individually during your consultation. Chrysalis Finance offers finance options.

The majority of the scarring will be concealed by underwear and swimsuits and mostly located within the groin crease. The length of the incision may run along the inside of your thigh depending upon how much skin removal takes place. As with all surgical scarring we cannot guarantee that the scarring will completely disappear. However the scarring tends to remain for the duration of your life.

You should expect approximately 3 to 4 weeks before returning to your normal day to day routine. Showers are permitted after 48 hours and you will be expected to wear a compression garment for a number of weeks. Approximately 6 weeks post operation you will be able to begin building up your physical activity levels to include exercise.

When undergoing a thigh lift you would typically experience some form of discomfort initially which usually subsides after a short period, approximately 48 to 72 hours. This discomfort can be managed using prescribed analgesics.

Inner thigh lifts are most commonly requested due to the area being subject to friction from clothing causing visible thinning of the skin. However, some individuals require an outer thigh lift alone whilst others require both an inner and outer thigh lift. Your surgeon will assess this with you prior to surgery.

Providing your body weight remains stable, the effects of your thigh lift will last indefinitely. Over time, like all areas of the body affected by gravity and changes in body shape or weight, further loosening of the skin may occur.
