✦ Overview

What is upper eyelid blepharoplasty?

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is a surgical technique that removes excess skin and some degree of fat from the upper eyelid. This type of surgery is also known as upper eyelid surgery, droopy eyelid surgery or a hooded eyelid lift. Surgeons make very precise cuts at the top of the eyelid to remove the loose tissue and sew the skin closed using very thin sutures. The resulting scars sit within the crease of the eyelid and will fade into almost invisible lines after time passes.

upper eyelid blepharoplasty in Harrogate

Upper eyelid surgery is typically performed for people who experience heaviness in their eyelids or appear tired due to the droop of their upper eyelids. They may also be experiencing loss of their peripheral vision field due to the droop in their upper eyelid margin onto their eye lashes. Some patients have had hooded lids since birth while others have developed this condition during their lifetime. In either situation these individuals generally seek an improved appearance when they look rested without altering the overall shape of their eyes. An upper blepharoplasty can address all of these issues. While our goal is certainly to make you look younger, it is also our goal to have you look like your “rested self” rather than someone new.

This surgery is generally completed in approximately 1-2 hours. We offer local anesthesia, however, we also offer general anesthesia with sedation for those who would prefer to be completely asleep during the procedure. Regardless of whether you receive local anesthesia or general anesthesia with sedation, you will be able to leave the hospital the same day you undergo surgery.

✦ What improvements can I see after my upper eyelid surgery?

Benefits of Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty in Harrogate

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is one of the least complicated cosmetic surgeries that we perform as well as one of the most fulfilling.
Many patients report to us that they wish they had their surgery sooner. The benefits go beyond appearance.
A lot of individuals feel like the surgery restored something they were unaware that they had lost.

Clearer vision

Your ability to see is limited when upper eyelid skin loosens and falls onto the lashes where you will probably have to lift your eyebrows to be able to see, read better or drive longer. The excess skin can be removed with upper eyelid surgery which opens up your field of view. Most people say they feel the difference immediately. In one day your eyelids were a problem, the next day they weren't.

More youthful appearance

You may look tired during the day just because your heavy upper eyelids casts a shadow under your eye. You will be able to see an improvement when this extra weight is lifted off and your eye opens with our surgery. The extra fold of skin which has hidden your natural crease will also come into view. It should be noted that you don't look "different" after surgery but rather look like you are more rested than normal.

Comfort through the day

Heavy eyelids are exhausting for most people, however, they rarely discuss it with anyone before their treatment is completed. They have to use extra muscle force to keep them from falling, which is extremely taxing. Eyelid surgery Harrogate patients find that their eyes feel much lighter and the tension in their foreheads decrease greatly within the first few days after recovery.

Confidence in the mirror

Some patients don't take photos of themselves or quit using eyeshadow due to inability to apply makeup. After upper blepharoplasty surgery, that space comes back. So does your eyeliner. And so will your self-confidence when no one catches you looking half asleep in a photo. The confidence shift tends to arrive quietly, not as a dramatic transformation.

✦ Do I qualify for Upper Eyelid Surgery?

Signs you may be a candidate for upper eyelid surgery

Not everyone with heavy eyelids needs surgery and not everyone who wants the procedure is clinically suitable. The best way to know for certain is a consultation.
That said, most patients who come to us for upper eyelid blepharoplasty have one or more of the following issues

  • Your lids start to feel too heavy in the afternoon.
  • Your upper eyelid is droopy and or lies across your lashes.
  • You find yourself raising your eyebrows more often than not to be able to see clearly.
  • It’s most noticeable when you’re tired, reading or at night while driving.
  • Your optician has said that your upper lid is blocking your view on either side, and asked you to consider surgery.

If any of this sounds familiar, it is worth booking a consultation. We take an hour to assess your eyelids, brow position, and overall eye area and to tell you honestly whether upper eyelid surgery is the right answer for you. Sometimes it may not be the answer, if so we will give you the best advice.

✦ What can go wrong during an upper eyelid surgery?

Risks of upper eyelid blepharoplasty

All surgery carries risk. Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is considered a low-risk procedure when performed by an experienced Consultant Plastic Surgeon, but it is important you understand what can happen and how we manage it. The risks below are listed honestly, not softened.

Bruising and swelling

Bruising and swelling

Everyone will have some degree of swelling and bruising. Generally, bruising resolves itself within 14 days. Swelling generally takes longer, around 4-6 weeks.

Dry or watery eyes

Dry or watery eyes

Some patients may have temporary dryness or excessive tearing in the first two to four weeks after surgery. Drops to lubricate are usually effective.

Asymmetry

Asymmetry

Many people develop minor asymmetry post-surgery as each eyelid heals independently. This typically resolves itself within three months.

Scars

Scars

The incision is located in the crease of the upper eyelid naturally and develops from pinkish coloration to almost. thin pale line within three to six months. Many patients note that their scar is virtually invisible by one year.

Infections

Infections

Rarely. Antibiotic ointment is used on the incision area for the first seven days. Look for signs such as increased redness, heat or discharge. These symptoms are indicative of an infection.

Revision due to under correction

Revision due to under correction

A small number of patients find the result conservative and request further skin removal after healing. We prefer to be cautious during the first procedure because removing too much skin can cause problems with eyelid closure.

FAQs on upper eyelid blepharoplasty in Harrogate

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty at Kliniken in Harrogate starts at £2,625 with local anaesthetic and £5,985 with general anaesthetic. The price includes your surgery, the surgical team, the facility, and your follow-up reviews. Consultation fees are charged separately. There are no hidden costs and the final price is confirmed in writing at consultation.

The NHS only funds upper eyelid blepharoplasty when there is documented visual impairment caused by the eyelid skin, confirmed by visual field testing. Cosmetic cases are not covered. If you have been told by your optician that your vision is affected, speak to your GP about a referral. If you do not meet the NHS criteria, private surgery may be an option.

Some insurers, including BUPA, AXA, Aviva, and WPA, cover upper blepharoplasty when it is needed for functional reasons and pre-authorised. You will usually need documented evidence of vision impairment. Policies vary, so check with your provider before your consultation. We can guide you through the paperwork if your case qualifies.

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty treats excess skin and fat on the upper eyelid. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty treats puffiness, under-eye bags, and loose skin on the lower lid. They are separate procedures with different techniques and recovery patterns. Some patients have both done together. Others need only one. The right answer depends on what is bothering you.

If your upper eyelids feel heavy, rest on your lashes, block part of your vision, or make you look tired when you are not, you may be a candidate. Genetic hooded eyes, age-related skin changes, and past eyelid surgery that has loosened are all common reasons patients come to us. A consultation is the only way to know for sure.

Most patients have upper eyelid blepharoplasty under local anaesthetic. You stay awake but feel nothing in the treated area. The injection stings briefly, then the eyelid numbs within a few minutes. General anaesthetic with sedation is available if you prefer. We discuss both options at consultation and recommend what suits you.

The surgery itself takes between 90 minutes and two hours. Add consultation check-in, marking up, anaesthetic time, and post-op observation, and you are usually at the clinic for three to four hours in total. You go home the same day.

Expect bruising and swelling for the first two weeks. Most patients return to work after seven to ten days if they work from home, or two weeks for office or public-facing roles. Makeup can be worn from around day ten. Contact lenses from around two weeks. Strenuous exercise from three weeks. The final result settles over three to six months.

Most patients are ready for desk or video-call work from day seven to ten. If your work is public-facing, physical, or requires strong eye focus for long hours, two weeks is more realistic. Bruising usually settles enough to be covered with concealer by day 10 to 14.

Do not drive while swelling is affecting your vision or while you are taking prescription pain medication, usually five to ten days. Makeup can be applied around the eye from day 10 and on the incision once fully closed, typically from day 14. Contact lenses from around two weeks, sooner if your surgeon confirms the eyes are healing well.

Natural results are the goal of every upper eyelid blepharoplasty we perform. The surgery is designed to remove only what needs to come out so the eye shape does not change, only the heaviness lifts. Most patients find friends and family comment that they look well-rested or ask if they have been on holiday, rather than guess they have had surgery.

Results typically last ten to fifteen years, sometimes longer. The surgery removes skin, but the skin continues to age naturally, and brow position can shift over time. Some patients return for a small refinement procedure after ten to twenty years. Most do not.

The incision sits within the natural crease of the upper eyelid. Scars fade from pink to pale within three to six months and are usually barely visible within a year. Patients prone to keloid scarring should mention this at consultation so we can adjust the surgical plan.

Check that your surgeon is on the GMC Specialist Register for Plastic Surgery or Ophthalmology. Look for Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, FRCS(Plast) or FRCOphth. Ask how many upper eyelid blepharoplasty procedures they perform each year. Ask to see before-and-after photographs of patients with a similar eye shape to yours. A good surgeon will answer all of these directly.

Yes, we ask all surgical patients to bring a Patient Summary from their GP to consultation. This gives your surgeon a full picture of your medical history, current medications, and any conditions that affect surgical planning. You can request a Patient Summary from your GP surgery or download one via the NHS App. If you have difficulty obtaining it, let us know and we will help.
