Mini tummy tuck in Harrogate

Mini tummy tuck (mini abdominoplasty) only treats the skin and fat under the belly button. They eliminate excess fat and loose skin found in the abdominal region just under the belly button that developed due to pregnancy or massive weight loss.

As opposed to a full tummy tuck, mini tummy tuck create less scarring and provide faster recovery time. Your mini tummy tuck surgery takes place under a general anaesthetic at our Harrogate clinic by a GMC registered consultant plastic surgeon.

✦ Overview

What is a mini tummy tuck?

Mini tummy tuck is the most minimal of the tummy tuck operations. This method focuses solely on the lower abdomen just beneath the belly button. A short incision is made along the base of the pubic hair line. Excess skin and fat are removed from underneath the navel and the remaining skin is tightened. The navel is not disturbed and therefore no cutting of the navel is required. One of the greatest differences between the mini and a full tummy tuck is that the navel does not require relocation.

If the stomach muscles have split apart at a low point, they may be tightened during the same surgical session. However, the mini tummy tuck cannot correct splits in stomach muscles nor reduce skin sagging that occurs higher up in the body specifically above the navel.

To address these issues, a full tummy tuck is necessary.

✦ Is mini tummy tuck the right procedure for me?

Am I a candidate for a mini tummy tuck?

This type of surgery is best suited for someone who has a very specific concern.

Excess skin or fat below the belly button

A mini tummy tuck works if the loose skin and fat sit below the navel and not above it.

A firm upper abdomen

You are a good candidate if your upper stomach is already reasonably tight.

Muscle separation limited
to the lower abdomen

Some separation of the stomach muscles is fine as long as it sits below the navel.

A stable weight

It helps to be close to a weight you can maintain ideally with a BMI around 30 or under.

Non smoker

You should not smoke or should have stopped well before surgery

What a mini tummy tuck cannot do

Because of its limitations, our surgeons are transparent from the start about what you can expect from this surgery.

  • A mini only corrects issues in the area located below the belly button. Therefore, it has no effect on the loose skin present in the top abdominal region.
  • A mini will not address separated muscles located above the belly button, an issue most pregnant women experience as a result of multiple pregnancies.
  • Since the belly button remains stationary during a mini tummy tuck surgery, it is unable to elevate it or the stretched out skin or scars that typically exist above it.
  • There is also a size restriction to how much fat can be removed through this method. If you have an excessive amount of hanging skin, a small incision made low on your abdomen will not be able to adequately correct it.
  • Larger areas of skin removal require longer incisions, such as those made for full tummy tuck, fleur-de-lis or Brazilian tummy tuck where all of the excess skin is removed.

How a mini tummy tuck is done

  1. A mini tummy tuck procedure typically requires one to two hours of surgery performed under general aneasthesia.
  2. Once your surgeon has anaesthetized you, they will make a small horizontal incision just above the pubic area and hairline. They will use this incision to remove as much of the loose skin from your lower abdomen as possible, pulling what remains tight.
  3. If your abdominal wall muscles were pulled apart, they will suture them together now, but only below your belly button. They will leave your belly button alone with no cutting or relocation of your belly button is required. Depending upon the amount of fatty tissue present in your lower stomach area, they may elect to perform liposuction to help improve your overall contour when removing the excess skin.
  4. After completing the suturing of the incisions in layers, they will fit a compression garment to provide additional support and stability to the new contours. After recovery from anaesthesia, you will be admitted overnight for observation before going home.

What about the scar?

In virtually all cases, the mini tummy tuck leaves a horizontal scar that is located just below the navel. The scar is positioned in such a way that it lies beneath both your underwear and swimsuit. On average, this type of incision will leave you with a scar that is shorter than a standard hip to hip scar that is left by a traditional abdominoplasty.

There is one truth however.

Mini does not necessarily mean short.

Depending upon the amount of excess tissue that needs to be removed from below the belly button, the incision may need to be longer to allow for removal of all the sagging skin, which may result in scars that approach or match the length of those seen after a complete tummy tuck abdominoplasty, even though many fewer procedures were performed above the navel. At your consultation, we show you where the scar will lie and estimate its approximate length.

FAQs on mini tummy tuck in Harrogate

Our mini tummy tucks are priced at £6850. This includes the surgery, general anaesthetic and all post operative care including all follow up appointments. There are no additional charges. We offer finance options to help you spread the cost of your treatment.

Mini tummy tuck operates on the lower abdominal area so if you have loose muscle separation below the navel then this is likely sufficient. However if you also have loose skin above the navel, then you would benefit more from having a full tummy tuck. It is best to consult with your surgeon to determine which type of tummy tuck is right for you.

To an extent, yes it can. Although, it will only operate on tightening the muscles below the navel. Should you have a separation in your lower stomach muscles they will be stitched back together as part of the surgery. However, any separation in your upper abdominal muscles cannot be treated with a mini tummy tuck. You will need to undergo a full tummy tuck.

No liposuction is not automatically performed as part of every mini tummy tuck. Depending on where you have excess fatty tissue you may want to consider liposuction. You and our surgeon will discuss whether or not liposuction will be required based on your individual concerns

Typically most people are able to return to their desk based jobs within 2 to 3 weeks and more physically demanding work will be approximately 4 to 6 weeks depending upon how quickly you recover. Once cleared by your surgeon, you should expect to see the final results in terms of body shape over 3 to 6 months due to final stages of swelling and contraction of skin.

As with any form of surgery under general anaesthetic there are some risks associated with undergoing a mini tummy tuck such as swelling, seroma and delayed wound closure. To minimize these risks we ensure all operations take place in a CQC regulated hospital and only use GMS registered consultant plastic surgeons who provide comprehensive post operative follow up. Your surgeon will fully explain the potential risks specific to your own circumstances prior to proceeding.

If you feel that your problem lies with a small pouch of loose skin located beneath your belly button that has remained despite diet and exercise, then a mini tummy tuck can achieve a lasting clean result with less scarring and faster recovery time compared to a full abdominoplasty. Conversely, if you experience loose skin in many areas, a mini may leave you feeling unsatisfied and you would be better suited by having a fuller treatment option. The best indicator of suitability is to attend an honest consultation with your surgeon.

We carry out all of our mini tummy tucks under general anaesthesia at our Harrogate hospital, which is our main surgical facility. Consultations can take place either at our Harrogate hospital or at any of our other clinic locations
