Ganglion cyst removal in Harrogate

A ganglion cyst is a liquid filled mass (cyst) which generally grows near a joint or a tendon, although it typically occurs on the wrist or hand. The cyst is created by joint fluid collecting beneath the skin that can vary in size depending over time.

Most people first find out they have a ganglion cyst on the wrist that is only apparent with activity or stress. Some ganglion cysts never give them any pain, while other cysts do produce some degree of pain or discomfort along with decreased mobility of the wrist joint.

Some people opt for ganglion cyst removal in Harrogate when the lump becomes too painfully persistent and is causing a problem with daily tasks.

Patients at Kliniken who suspect they have developed a ganglion cyst or are experiencing symptoms can schedule an appointment to be assessed and diagnosed so that they can determine if ganglion cyst surgery is warranted.

✦ Our process

What is involved in ganglion cyst removal surgery?

Ganglion cyst removal surgery at Kliniken Harrogate is typically done as an outpatient procedure using local anaesthesia. Our goal is to remove both the cyst and the connection (stalk) of the cyst to the joint or tendon so that we can minimize the risk of the cyst coming back.

Consultation & examination

In the preoperative consultation, our surgeon will assess the lump and confirm that it appears to be a ganglion cyst. We also discuss treatment options for you, such as whether ganglion cyst removal would be suitable for your case or if it would be more reasonable to monitor the cyst.

Numbing (Local anaesthesia)

If ganglion cyst removal is recommended the procedure will take place under local anaesthesia. Local anaesthesia makes the area numb to all sensation; this way you remain awake but pain-free throughout the entire process.

Cyst removal

An incision is made through the skin where the cyst is, to allow the surgeon to locate the stalk of the cyst and remove the cyst completely. Once removed, the incision is closed with sutures and dressed.

Aftercare and discharge

The ganglion cyst removal procedure generally lasts about 20-30 minutes. You will be given instructions for the post-operative care of the wound and for the recovery period. After the procedure, you will go home the same day.

✦ After ganglion cyst surgery

Recovery & aftercare

Physical activity

Most patients resume normal, low-impact daily physical activity within 1–2 days following removal of their ganglion cyst. However, it is generally recommended that physical activities (i.e., lifting or use of the hand/wrist) be delayed for approximately 1–2 weeks for healing to occur.

Wrist movement

It is common for some degree of swelling and stiffness to develop in the wrist following ganglion cyst removal. Gentle movement of the hand is often encouraged once comfortable. However, significant hand motion should be avoided until the area has healed.

Caring for the wound

Following removal of the ganglion cyst, suturing is done to close the incision and a dressing is placed over the closure site to protect the wound. Instructions regarding care including the need to keep the wound clean and dry are given and dressing is removed 7–14 days post surgery.

Results & recurrence

Once healing takes place most patients report improvement in their symptoms. However, the possibility of recurrence does exist. Surgical excision of a ganglion cyst is designed to minimize the likelihood of recurrence.
