✦ Overview

What moles really are

Naevi, commonly referred to as moles, are masses of pigment producing cells which most people develop during childhood or adolescence. These can vary in colour ranging from skin tone to pink, brown or black and may be either flat or raised. On average adults have approximately 10 – 40 moles.

Although the majority of moles are harmless, changes in a mole’s shape, size or colour, itchiness or bleeding could potentially indicate the need for further assessment. Consulting your doctor will give you a definitive answer one way or the other.

✦ Our process

How is mole removal in Harrogate performed?

Before the procedure

Surgeon reviews the mole, confirms surgical or shave excision, agrees the plan and books the appointment.

Surgical excision

Numbs and cleans the area, removes the mole with a small margin, sends tissue for histology, closes with stitches if needed.

Shave excision

Shaves the mole level with the skin. No stitches, faster healing but not suitable for every mole.

Post procedure

Home the same day with aftercare advice. Follow-up in a few days to check healing and confirm histology results.

✦ Expectations after removal

What recovery after mole removal really looks like

Mild soreness is normal and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief. Most people return to work the next day unless their role puts strain on the treated area.

  • Days 1 to 2: Keep the area clean and dry. Some redness and tenderness is normal.
  • First week: Stitches (if used) are typically removed after 7 to 14 days.
  • 1 to 3 months: The scar starts to flatten and fade.
  • 6 to 12 months: Final result. Most scars settle into a fine, pale line.

✦ Frequently asked questions

FAQs on mole removal in Harrogate

There will be a slight pinch from the anaesthetic injection, then after that, the area where the mole was removed will be numb for the duration of the surgery. After the anaesthetic wears off (a few hours) mild soreness may occur which can usually be managed with paracetomol.

Yes. A surgical excision creates a small thin line which will be visible for 6 to 12 months. A shave excision leaves a slightly larger flat area which will also disappear within 6 to 12 months.

This is unusual when the entire mole is completely surgically excised. When using shave excisions there is a very small chance of regrowth as some cells may still exist beneath the shaved edge.

No. You can make an appointment directly with Kliniken. It would be wise to see your doctor if your mole has quickly changed and you are concerned about skin cancer, they can refer you to Kliniken under the NHS urgent pathway.

The actual time taken to perform the surgery is approximately 15 to 30 minutes.

A surgical excision involves removing the whole mole along with its base and closing it with sutures. This type of excision allows for histological examination. A shave excision is simply shaving the surface layer of the mole to remove the raised part. No sutures are required making this method quicker to heal.
