What is a Brazilian tummy tuck?

A Brazilian tummy tuck or lipoabdominoplasty is an operation that combines the removal of excess fat using liposuction to create a smoother abdomen along with a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). By removing excess fat using liposuction, a tummy tuck can remove loose skin while tightening the underlying abdominal wall muscle. While a traditional tummy tuck produces results that give a flatter stomach, a Brazilian tummy tuck provides a flatter stomach and a narrower waistline.
People often confuse a “Brazilian” tummy tuck with a “Brazilian butt lift”. A BBL transfers fat from other areas to the buttocks. A Brazilian tummy tuck reshapes the stomach and waist. Both procedures share the name “Brazilian”, but they are very different operations.The technique was developed by Dr. Osvaldo Saldanha of Brazil in 2001. Now many surgeons around the world perform this type of surgery.

How a Brazilian tummy tuck differs from a standard tummy tuck

It comes down to how the skin is loosened.

Standard tummy tuck

In a Standard Tummy Tuck, the surgeon will lift all the excess skin and fat off the muscles of your abdominal wall over an extensive surface area. This process involves cutting many small blood vessels throughout this large area of tissue removal, which leads to decreased blood flow for slower healing and typically requires surgical drains to remove the fluid accumulation post surgery.

In a Brazilian Tummy Tuck, the surgeon removes the loose skin using liposuction. With liposuction there are significantly less blood vessels being severed than with a traditional tummy tuck, allowing much of the remaining tissue to drain naturally. As a result, we have found that approximately 75-80% of our patients do not require surgical drains after surgery. The decrease in fluid collection allows for a generally quicker, more comfortable recovery.

Scars & Recovery

Tightening your waist

 

Below the layers of fat lies a strong layer of tissue referred to as Scarpa’s fascia. When performing a Brazilian Tummy Tuck procedure, the surgeon tightens the fascia layer, stitching it to the abdominal wall. This layer acts much like an internal corset. Drawing it inward causes the circumference of your waist to be tightened on the interior and thus creates the hour glass shape that standard tummy tucks have difficulty achieving.

Tightening Scarpa’s Fascia is done separately from repairing the muscles. Muscle repair is designed to close the space caused by either pregnancy, weight gain/loss etc. Together both repair methods will achieve a flat stomach (muscle repair) and a shaped waist (tightening of Scarpa’s Fascia).

Fixing a C-section overhang

Many mothers who have had children arrive at our clinic with a pocket of skin that extends outward over their previous C-section scars. These pockets occur when the original C-section scar “sticks” to the underlying tissue and has trapped a pouch of skin directly above it. A Brazilian tummy tuck eliminates these issues in one operation. In a single low incision located just beneath your undergarment line, our surgeon removes your old scars, removes the excess skin and closes the area.

Liposuction also plays a role in refining the area, allowing our surgeon to sculpt away unwanted fat surrounding the area to create a seamless blend between areas of fat that are full and areas where there is little to no fat.
