Increase breast size and improve shape with expert care in North Yorkshire

Breast augmentation is a surgery using implants or fat for both an increase in size of breasts and to improve the shape. It is also known as breast enlargement, breast enhancement, or a boob job.

At Kliniken - Harrogate, patients will have a consultation with a consultant plastic surgeon which lasts approximately an hour. The operation may be undertaken under either sedation or general anaesthesia. Most patients are able to return to work approximately 2 weeks post surgery.

✦ Overview

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation increases breast size through the use of silicone implants or fat. Breast enlargement surgery can help restore the shape of breasts and treat unevenness. This procedure is widely referred to as breast enlargement, breast enhancement or a “boob job.” In the UK, it is one of the most common cosmetic procedures and it typically requires about 1 to 1.5 hours to complete.

At Kliniken Harrogate, breast augmentation with implants can be carried out under local anaesthetic with sedation or under general anaesthetic. For some patients, local anaesthesia combined with sedation provides a viable alternative to a full general anaesthetic. This will be discussed in greater detail during the pre operative consultation.

What are the implants for breast augmentation we use?

Silicone gel implants come in various shapes (round and teardrop), and different sizes and profile options. These implants can be placed either above the pectoral muscles or beneath them. At the time of consultation, the best combination of implant size, shape and placement will depend upon the your existing breast tissue, overall body type and desired outcome.

How long does the surgery take?

Typically, this is completed as a day case. Most patients are able to leave the hospital on the day of their operation, however, there are instances where an overnight stay is required. After recovery from surgery (usually within 2 weeks for most light activities and usually after 6 weeks for intense physical activities), breast shape stabilizes over a period of 3-6 months as the silicone gel implants settle into place with the surrounding soft tissues.

✦ What improvements can I see after my breast augmentation surgery?

Benefits of breast augmentation in Harrogate

Restored shape

Pregnancy and weight loss have an impact on breast size. Many women report feeling flat or deflated when their bodies are otherwise unchanged. Breast implants restore lost volume and provide a new upper portion of the breast as well as restore the desired breast shape for many.

Better balance

Most breasts are slightly different sizes. If the difference is larger than that then you may find yourself with bras that do not fit comfortably and clothing does not hang correctly. By using a different size of implant on each breast, women can achieve an equal size. Tubular shaped breasts can often be improved upon.

Renewed confidence

For patients, the most significant change is not in appearance of the breasts. The greatest difference is in how they dress. Avoiding swimwear is no longer an issue. Tops do not require additional padding. Although this procedure will not change your life, it will silently remove something you have had to work with for many years.

Lasting results

Although silicone breast implant typically last 10 to 15 years or even longer, there is no guarantee these devices will last throughout your entire life. At some point, the implants may need replacement. Most patients receive years of satisfactory results before needing to consider replacement

✦ How can I qualify for breast augmentation surgery?

Signs you may be a candidate for breast augmentation in Harrogate

Breasts are affected by pregnancy and breastfeeding and are never going back to their pre pregnancy state. Volume lost from the upper portion of the breasts typically does not come back. When you are done having children and your weight is stabilized, that is generally a good time to start considering a breast augmentation.

Risks of breast augmentation surgery

All surgery carries risk. Breast augmentation surgery is considered a low-risk procedure when performed by an experienced consultant plastic surgeon, but it is important you understand what can happen and how we manage it. The risks below are listed honestly, not softened.

Capsular contracture

Capsular contracture

Scarring develops from all implanted material and on occasion this scarring tightens up which can affect the shape of the breasts and make them feel firmer. Surgery to remove or change an implant may be required if the scarring causes pain or shows clear.

Implant rupture

Implant rupture

Modern silicone implants have been designed to be long lasting, however they can rupture eventually. Modern implants are mostly made as "cohesive gel" implants so that when the implant ruptures, the silicone does not spread out like older type implants. Ruptured implants must be removed and changed for a new one.

Changes in nipple sensation

Changes in nipple sensation

A majority of patients experience changes in nipple sensitivity during recovery after a breast augmentation procedure. Nipple sensation generally returns to pre-surgical levels in most patients by a couple of months. However there are times when changes are permanent.

Infection or wound healing

Infection or wound healing

It is rare for infections to occur post-operatively from a breast augmentation. When infections do develop they are serious and usually require treatment with antibiotics. In some instances, the infected implant may need to be temporarily removed until the infection clears then replaced with a new implant.

BIA-ALCL

BIA-ALCL

The only form of lymphoma linked to textured implants. The risk of this happening is extremely low and is confined to those specific types of textured implant models. If it's relevant we recommend using smooth implants and provide you with the appropriate information during the consultation

Future revision surgery

Future revision surgery

All breast implants are not for life time use. The majority of them can last from 10 to 15 years, however, eventually all women will require a surgical revision as their body changes shape. This can include swapping ONE out for another, removing the implant or changing size.

Generally speaking the operation lasts about one hour. However, depending on how quickly the patient recovers from the effects of the anaesthetic, and whether she requires any further treatment during her stay, most patients are discharged the same day as the operation. In some cases, a night's stay may be required.

Yes. It is possible to undergo breast enlargement using local anaesthesia combined with mild sedation, rather than undergoing a full general anaesthetic. Depending on individual circumstances the decision regarding whether to proceed with local with sedation or general anaesthetic is made at consultation time.

In general, most women feel well enough to resume normal daily routines within seven days of having had the surgery. Patients generally return to lighter forms of exercise such as walking about two weeks after the operation. More strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for about six weeks before returning to full fitness. A final shape will develop over three to six months.

Most people who have undergone breast enlargement can return to work at a desk type job after approximately two weeks. Driving should be ok after one to two weeks providing you can carry out an emergency stop safely. Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should be avoided for about six weeks.

The main risks are capsular contracture, implant rupture, changes in nipple sensation, infection, and the small risk of BIA-ALCL with textured implants. Most women will need revision surgery at some point. We discuss all risks honestly at consultation.

Many women successfully breast feed after having breast enlargement although some experience a reduction in their milk production. If you are planning to have children, it is advisable to postpone your breast enlargement until after you have completed producing milk so as to obtain the best possible result.

Standard mammography tests may be more difficult to interpret due to the presence of implants in the breasts. Informing your radiographer that you have implants means that they can use additional views (known as Eklund views) to adequately assess the remaining breast tissue. Continue with routine breast screening as usual.

Silicone breast implants are made to last for ten to fifteen years but they're not designed to be permanent. Most women will require some type of revision (a replacement, a removal, or a different size) at some time.

Breast implant surgery is done using silicone to give you additional volume in a one time surgical procedure. Your new size will be somewhat predictable. Fat transfer utilizes your existing fat from other areas of your body. It feels more natural, however it provides less volume and therefore may take multiple sessions.
