Patients can typically have a lower eyelid blepharoplasty performed and go home the same day.

The procedure can be done using sedation or can be asleep with a general anaesthetic.

The incision for a lower eyelid blepharoplasty is just below the hairline of the lower eyelid, extending towards the crows feet on the outer side around the eye, hidden in a crease of the skin.

This allows access to the muscle and fat below to optimise the result.

Individuals most likely to benefit from a lower eyelid blepharoplasty are those with fat bulging under the eye, with skin creases or those with deep tear troughs.

This may be for a number of reasons including genetics (Young people with lax skin) or age-related.

As patients get older, the lower eyelid area including the skin and muscle tone loss. Along with the effects of gravity and the loss of elasticity, fat starts to bulge below the eye and the overlying skin stretches.

This can result in increased tearing and make patients feel drastically older.

Patients can check their suitability for a lower eyelid blepharoplasty by standing in front of a mirror and while pinching the extra skin on one lower eyelid to ensure that they can comfortably close the eye without any pulling sensation.

Post surgery, once fully recovered from the effects of aesthetic patients are let out of the clinic with close follow up arranged to ensure improvements would happen as anticipated.

Patients tend to notice an immediate improvement in the bags with fewer skin creases.

The swelling after surgery occurs for the first 48 hours and after this stage, it starts to improves.  Some patients also notice redness in the eye which subsides in a few days.

We see patients one week after surgery to check on the patients and remove any visible stitches. By 2 weeks patients feel brighter and fresher.

There are short term which can can temporarily help. These can last from 3 months to a year.

Few of the options are filler injectables, anti-wrinkle injections, creams and serums, skin tightening with peels, radio frequency and lasers.

But to deal with the underlying problem for a long term effect, surgery is most likely to be most effective.
