Patients can typically have an Inverted Nipple Correction performed and go home the same day.
Patients can have a procedure under local anaesthetic with or without sedation or occasionally can be put to sleep with a general anaesthetic.
The incision used is around the bottom half of the nipple-areolar complex and the nipple freed from the deeper fibrous attachments.
The incisions are closed with dissolving stitches and a waterproof dressing following Inverted Nipple Correction.
Patients may have different degrees of inverted nipples from flat to being pulled into the breast itself.
There may be variations in how the nipple responds to stimulation and there may be difficulties in breastfeeding.
This may be present from when the breasts develop at puberty but is more likely to be found in either women in their 30’s or in women who are menopausal when the breast tissue shrinks and pulls the nipple down.
When patients come into the clinic, a UK trained plastic surgeon with expert knowledge of what the patient seeks makes a full assessment for the reasons sought for surgery and established and what they hope to achieve as a result of having Inverted Nipple Correction.
It is vital to ensure there are no signs of breast cancer, and if needed, the patient will be asked to attend the breast cancer screening programme in their local hospital.
The patient’s family planning and breastfeeding plan will be checked as surgery may not allow this to happen as the nipple may need to be separated from the ducts.
Some patients may try suction cups or nipple piercings which help reduce the chance of nipple falling back.
These need to stay in place (piercing) or be repeated (suction) to try and stretch the nipple. Neither can deal with the fibrous tissue below.
Patients are put in a support bra after surgery with avoidance of pressure on the nipple itself as this may push it back to where it was.
There will be some swelling after surgery but there should not be any pain.
Once safe, patients are let out of the clinic with close follow up arranged to ensure improvements would happen as anticipated.
