Read further to learn the basics of lip lift surgery, its benefits, and why Kliniken is the best choice for your transformation.

What Is Lip Lift Surgery?

Lip lift surgery is a cosmetic surgery designed to shorten the distance between the upper lip and nose, enhancing the shape and overall appearance of lips. Unlike fillers, which add temporary volume, a lip lift offers permanent lip enhancement by adjusting the upper lip’s natural positioning. The procedure is often called an upper lip lift or bullhorn lip lift due to the shape of an incision made just beneath the nose. Its goal is to reveal more of the pink part of your lip and create a fuller, more youthful appearance. If you want a subtle yet long-lasting lip augmentation, a lip lift is the perfect alternative to fillers or other temporary treatments.

Can You Benefit From Lip Lift Surgery?

You might wonder if lip lift surgery is right for you. While this treatment has gained popularity for its impressive results, there are several factors to consider before scheduling the procedure. During your consultation at Kliniken, our UK-trained plastic surgeons will assess your facial structure and aesthetic goals to determine if you’re a good fit. Most of our lip lift patients are hoping to achieve the following:

  • Permanently enhance lip shape and volume
  • Correct drooping or elongated lips
  • Reduce the space between the upper lip and nose
  • Make teeth more visible when smiling
  • Address concerns about “thinner” lips due to ageing
  • Experience noticeable sagging skin, deep folds, or turkey neck
  • Wish to refine and enhance the contours of their neck.
  • Are generally in good health and have realistic expectations for the procedure

Advantages of Lip Augmentation

Why are more and more people choosing lip lift surgery? It’s simple: the procedure delivers impressive results that provide both cosmetic and emotional benefits. They include:

  • Natural-Looking Lip Augmentation – Unlike fillers, a lip lift enhances your lips by reshaping rather than adding artificial volume.
  • Permanent Results – No need for regular maintenance or repeat treatments. A lip lift is a one-time solution.
  • Youthful Appearance – This procedure reduces the elongated space caused by ageing, giving the face a rejuvenated look.
  • Improved Smile – A lip lift reveals more of your teeth and lips, adding elegance and charm to your expression.
  • Customised Outcome – Each lip lift is tailored to a patient’s facial proportions to create harmonious and natural results.

Detailing the Lip Lift Surgery Process

The entire lip lift procedure takes about an hour to complete. Moreover, it doesn’t require an overnight stay, so you can return home to recover shortly after the anesthetic wears off. The process includes:

  • Consultation – You and your surgeon will discuss your goals before creating a bespoke treatment plan.
  • Preparation – We’ll use local anaesthesia to numb the area under your nose and ensure your comfort.
  • Precise Incision – Our surgeons will make a small, bullhorn-shaped incision just beneath your nose.
  • Tissue Removal – We’ll remove excess skin to lift the upper lip.
  • Careful Closure – Finally, we’ll close the incision with nearly-invisible fine sutures.

What to Expect Following Lip Lift Surgery

Recovery from lip lift surgery is straightforward, especially under the expert guidance of our Kliniken team. After the procedure, you may experience mild swelling or discomfort, but that should subside within a week. During recovery, you’ll see gradual improvements as the swelling reduces and your lips settle into their new shape. Here’s how to manage your recovery effectively:

  • Follow Post-Op Instructions – Keep the surgical area clean and follow your surgeon’s guidance for aftercare.
  • Allow Healing Time – While some results are visible immediately after swelling reduces, full effects will be seen after two to three months with proper care.
  • Adhere to Downtime Suggestions – You may need to wait up to two weeks before resuming your normal activities.

Patients can typically have a lip lift performed and go home the same day.

Patients can have the procedure under local anaesthetic & sedation (where you are asleep and breathe for yourself) or can be asleep with a general anaesthetic.

The incision for a lip lift in the crease at the base of the nose under the nostrils.

The skin is removed and the scar is hidden in the natural crease around the nostrils and base of the nose.

A lip lift is likely to benefit those with previously fuller lips that have thinned with time with little of the “red” surface of the lip visible.

This may be for a number of reasons most commonly, age-related.

As patients get older, the area on the upper lip including the skin and muscle may begin to elongate due to gravity, resulting in a gradual decrease in the volume of the upper lip, that then looks thinner.

Those who wear lipstick may notice that less can be applied and so contributes to an aged look.

The signs of ageing include the various structures around the face drooping, so once a youthful face with the inverted triangular shape with most mass around the cheeks, shifts to the triangular structure with more emphasis at the bottom of the face, near the jawline.

One of the most effective ways of demonstrating this is to compare photos of the patient in their early 20’s to the present.

When patients come into the clinic, our UK-trained plastic surgeon makes a full assessment of the patient.

This includes any relevant history, including reasons for surgery and a thorough examination of the nose and the upper lip itself.

Part of this process is explaining to the patients what can be done, why, and what to expect, based on each patients’ anatomy and suitability for surgery for a lip lift.

Patients are put into a “We see you in one week after surgery” to check on the patients and remove any visible stitches.

The swelling starts to come down gradually from 48 hours after surgery and within a few weeks patients feel brighter and fresher.

Once safe, patients are let out of the clinic with close follow up arranged to ensure improvements would happen as anticipated.

One alternative to a surgical lip lift is the use of fillers which may be either synthetic which is temporary or use of natural ones such as fat.

This can provide a method to deal with the lost volume but does not adequately address the increased distance between the base of the nose and lip.
